Blepharospasm certainly doesn't sound like an eye problem anyone would want to deal with.
But chances are, in today’s fast paced, stressful world, you've experienced it at some point. Blepharospasm is the technical way of saying eye twitching, which is defined as an abnormal involuntary blinking or spasms of the eye lids. See? Not nearly as bad as you thought.
While there can be some serious causes of eye twitching – and if you are experiencing prolonged stretches of eye twitching please see your eye care professional – many of the causes are fairly common. Some of these include stress, prolonged staring or eye strain, excessive amounts of caffeine and fatigue.
Blepharospasm is usually not something to worry about. It’s associated with an abnormal function of the basal ganglion, which is the part of the brain responsible for controlling the muscles. Many times eye twitching is the product of anxiety, something along the lines of a nervous “tick” some people develop when dealing with a troublesome situation.
If you’re dealing with a periodic stretch of eye twitching you most likely don’t need any specific treatment. The best remedy might be as easy as just trying to relax. The more you can calm down, the more likely your eye twitching will slow and subside. Other things to help reduce eye twitching is getting enough sleep each night and cutting down on the caffeine intake.
