Causes of Dry Eye

Aging: As we age, tear production decreases. Women’s tear production can be severely affected by menopause.
Contact Lenses: Wearing contact lenses can increase tear evaporation. This can result in irritation, increased protein deposits, infections, and eye pain. Dry eye is the leading cause of contact lens discomfort.
Medications: A variety of medications can reduce tear production. These include antidepressants, antihistamines, diuretics, beta blockers, and sleeping pills
Digital Device Usage: When using a computer, phone, or iPad we stare more, and don’t blink our eyes enough. This can cause tear evaporation.
Health conditions: Conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease affect tear production. Most autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, and Sjogren’s Syndrome do as well
Eyelid conditions: Crusty swollen eyelids can cause tears to evaporate quickly and irritate the cornea
Skin conditions: Acne rosacea, can cause the eyelid glands to get swollen affecting tear production.

About Our Tear Film

– The eye is lubricated by two kinds of tears produced by glands in the upper and lower eyelids
– Constant tears are continuously formed to lubricate the eye and fight infections
– Reflex tears are produced in response to irritation, injury, or emotion. These help rinse the surface of the eye

A balance between both is necessary to ensure that your eyes are comfortable and protected. When constant tear flow is reduced there is irritation that can cause excessive reflex tearing. Hence “watery eyes”. A lack of tears, improper lubrication, or tears draining too quickly can result in dry eye as well.
